The 20th round of the English Premier League season will finish off in Liverpool as Everton hosts Tottenham Hotspur at Goodison Park on Sunday, January 3. Spurs have climbed into a top-four spot in the table and will be fighting to stay there until the end of the season to earn a berth in the 2016/17 European Champions League competition. Everton has been playing mediocre soccer so far this season even though they have one of the league’s top scorers in Belgian international striker Romelu Lukaku.

    • These two clubs met back August and played to a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane in London. Spurs were 1-0 winners at Goodison Park last season and took their home match by a score of 2-1. Tottenham is unbeaten in their past six meetings with Everton’s last win being 2-1 at home in league play in December of 2012. Overall, the clubs have met 170 times in the past with Tottenham winning 63, losing 55 and drawing 52.

Everton is coming off of a 4-3 last-minute loss to Stoke City at home in a thriller last Monday. They enter the weekend in 11th place with 26 points from six wins, eight draws and five losses. They’ve scored a respectable 35 goals and have allowed 28 against. They have three wins at home on Merseyside along with three draws and three defeats. They’ve scored 19 times at home and allowed 15 against and have two wins, a draw and three losses in their past half dozen outings at Goodison. Everton has five clean sheets on the season and has been shut out four times.

Spurs were late 2-1 winners at newly-promoted Watford in their last outing and those three points saw them climb into fourth place. They have 35 points and enter the weekend just four back of first place. Tottenham has nine wins, eight draws and a pair of losses on the year with 33 goals for and a league-low 15 against. They’ve kept seven clean sheets so far and have failed to score four times. Spurs have lost just one game on the road this campaign and that was the season opener when they were downed 1-0 at Old Trafford by Manchester United on an own goal.

Tottenham’s road record consists of four victories, four draws and a defeat with 15 goals scored and eight conceded. They’re unbeaten in their last eight road trips and will be looking to make it nine on Sunday. Young English international striker Harry Kane took a few games to get rolling this season, but is now playing at the best of his capabilities. The future looks good for this Spurs side since it’s one of the youngest squads in the league.

Everton has a win against Newcastle to go along with their loss to Stoke during the festive season. Spurs have managed to score at least one goal in all of their away matches other than their loss to Man United. Tottenham expect to be without Moussa Dembele, Clinton N’Jie and Alex Pritchard for the game. Meanwhile, Everton will be without Tom Cleverley, James McCarthy, Tyias Browning, Bryan Oviedo, Phil Jagielka, Tony Hibbert and Steven Pienaar.
